Sun 17 March ... Get Some Feeders Out!

Ian says……..  Our first day in the Cairngorms always starts with getting the bird and squirrel feeders out at different locations and the first stop was just 5 minutes from the cottage round at Loch Garten.  Within seconds of the first feeder going up we had dozens of birds all descending on to the peanuts and in less than a minute we had a Crested Tit so even though the weather was not good for photography David got the camera out and a perch was placed near to the feeder for the birds to land on.  A second Crestie turned up along with Coal, Blue and Great Tits, a Robin and Chaffinches. The rain set in and as David had managed a shot of the Crestie we decided to head up to the Cairngorm ski centre car park to look for Snow Buntings. After stopping lower down to take a few ‘record’ view shots we found the barrier up to the main car park closed. It’ Sunday and the skiers were out in force so we decided to go back to Loch Garten via Tesco in Aviemore. Back on the car park and with the weather a bit better we all got the cameras out and waited for those Cresties. They did arrive but guessing where they would land was a bit of a lottery and it wasn’t long before the weather worsened again so Pauline and David packed up. I gave it a bit longer but only managed a single shot of one on a natural twig before I too gave in. Back up the Cairngorm we went and immediately saw a small flock of Snow Buntings just above the car park but before we could get out skiers had got a bit too close and they flew off. We stood next to the picnic tables  -  this gave us a good view of the area but they had disappeared.  After 20 minutes or so they reappeared but the fine driving snow had arrived and it was a case of grabbing a few shots that would do for the time being. By now the light was fading so it was time to call it a day and wait to see what tomorrow would bring  ………

Pauline says: …. The weather was the kind of appalling that I don’t go out in especially the driving blizzard complete with ice spicules on the Cairngorm (I wasn’t dressed for it like the other users of the ‘Gorm - full face mask, goggles, skies and snowboards!) Surely there can’t be any fun keeping your balance while whistling down a hillside at scary mph … oh dear who lets this old fogey out?!!!
