Tue 15th Jan ... 'Owl be an Addict' ....

January 16, 2013  •  4 Comments

My name is Pauline and I'm an owl addict .... Well thats not quite how it is (?really?) No really - we decided to return and have another bash because we (read I) dipped out so badly last Saturday and even His Nibs only got 4 viable shots and they were gently soft ... So I dragged myself out of bed at 5.15am and into the car and away we went yet again - to spend another 8 hours in pursuit of which ever owl would come close enough! After an anxious wait the good looking dark and undamaged bird finally made several quarters of the field but only truly came into range once - hence the obvious sequence in the photos. I felt sure the 'shorties' would follow later, but apart from a brief foray to stoop repeatedly at a buzzard perched in the hedgerow and then a few listless quarters of the field, that was it and basically for the camera the result was a 'no-show' of shorties. The light came and the air was almost still - perfect conditions - but the owls mostly ignored the day .... and with uncharacteristic suddeness we decided at 3.45pm to cut our losses and get off home before rush-hour .... My name is Pauline ... and the cure isn't working ... I'm still an owl addict ... and I will be back!

So three days later Ian finally looks thro his images from this day and says 'I haven't got much' .... 'Here I says - give that to me and lets be having a look' ..... Usual story ... 'not much' transpires into 'Blimy' (well if thats not much matey - I'm glad you're not really trying!) Damn and blast that 600 lens .....

Beautiful Barn Owl shots guys. As you point out, a superb specimen. Great blog that I regularly look forward to reading.

Thanks Brian and yes its time we bumped into each other again! Its very interesting the shots that people like or rate - that last one I nearly didn't bother editing cos I thought it was just that bit too far away ... but I suppose its the variation that makes the interest - some close up (when the bird allows it!) and some more distant showing more habitat...
